AI: Artificial Inteligence
AI stands for Artificial Inteligence. In a world where there are so many decisions to be made for any of us since we wake up to the time we rest our heads, such a tool would help quite a lot. When talking about AI it used to be so much Asimov’s world, Kubrick’s and Spielberg’s movies. The idea of robots was so revolting in the Terminator vision as these machines being the enemy, but we have to understand the whole complexity and control the robot would still need from human side that it’s not really something scary. It could be rather helpful. However delicate the subject, AI is slowly becoming part of our life in so many fields: from home to office to medical care and entertainment. I have made a short list to prove that somehow we allow AI to enter our lives and it’s a good thing from so many reasons, while still owning control over our decisions.
Hey Siri
Hey Siri is probably going to be „da-da” or „ma-ma” of every kid. Mine is still shy to talk to the machine, probably feeling a little bit strange from the normality he was raised in. The HomePod is a very nice invention, high-end design, helpful when managing the house music with a small little kid around, useful for finding out the time, basic google answers and even learning foreign language (English mostly, as my testing on him to understand something else resulted in „wrong commands”). The command is simple, easy, the „ears” hear you from several points of the house, so all seems in order.
Design Template
When you’re at work and asked to make a quick presentation, you can’t even tell that there is a machine in the background ready to serve more. I am always lost in design when putting on paper the ideas and then having to define the shape of it. Sometimes I would include all the possible designs from one slide to another. The suggestions are never unitary, but you get less of the burden of „decision making” off your shoulder and you can then focus on the message. I think the importance of the message is endorsed by „shape”, but the timings are so short, that any design suggestion would help shape a better communication which can pass the message better.
Roborock
This has been the most fantastic tool: program a machine to clean up the house while you can leave home or work. I was super excited by the first model which meant wondering around the house and do the dust clean. This one required some effort from my side to start and stop, to pick-up and bring back to base. Now my next expectation is that a home assistant will be available. Someone to actually pick up the clothes from the ground, analyse the clean or not factor and then to put them into the closet or in the dirty clothes bag. Or even put stuff into the washing machine. Also someone to do the dish washing without making so many choices from our side. I get tired thinking if a plate should go into the machine, into that part or another. There are so many elements and so many choices that we are tired from the simple things we need to decide upon.
The medical care
The robotic intervention in medical care in the recent years has been indeed revolutionary. I am saying revolutionary because 20 years ago it was a lot of human intervention, while right now the machine has so much „knowledge” that it can do a lot of the stuff on its own. Of course we are not getting inside a machine and coming out „cured”. But we have made significant progress and this helps all of us get to a better health. I rememebr when having an eye surgery 20 years ago, there was so much doubt. And there are so many small things which could go wrong that the doctor would not take chances. I have experienced this when I was 20 and correcting my miopia. One eye was under human control, the other was under robotic control. With the robot the doctor could get my eye sight back to 100%, with his intervention only close to 100%. Also on medical intervention, the robotic arms are very helpful.
The play
We can currently play with AI to take out people out of photographs and do a lovely family picture. We can create an avatar. We can paint like Van Gogh or design like an artist. We have such a great tool to help us be better. Of course this opens our horizon of development. The copyright is still under pending laws to apply to our AI masterpieces.
Command to the machine
Sometimes the machines overlap one another. If a command is given and phone, watch, laptop and HomePod are in the same place, there is a war among the machines who to serve best. This is one thing that we could easily adjust with rules. And then you would need to define who is taking the command and when. These regulations could lead to malfunction under other circumstances, so the future brings also „script writers” to help define the possible scenarios for machines.
The Future
As I see the future, I believe the biggest burdens on our shoulders are actually the several small decisions we need to make. All these things could be done by AI with simple options. This I see as a simple and very positive change into our lives. Of course AI could actually learn to be more like us. The further debate about using your personal information for further suggestions, is indeed scary. Just like Asimov’s world we need to decide what is acceptable for robots to make. AI is short for Artificial Inteligence and means all the robotic help we could get in the small silly decisions and actions. I think AI is actually very positive as I look at it.
