Fibre naturale

Matasea poate fi gasitata atat in forma naturala cat si in forma sintetica.

Natural Fibers

I am a big fan of natural fibers. I have always preferred to wear something made out of natural or good fiber rather than some fashionable outfit that makes me feel uncomfortable during a regular day at the office. Maybe some of us live under heavy air conditioning, but my regular production day means air conditioning on and off, so I have to wear some good fibers, which will allow me to breathe.

I work in tv advertising production and all the billboards with more or less fancy models wearing really nice outfits don’t start me. It’s strange for me to make such a statement, but hear me out. I know those model wear only for approximately one hour such an outfit, not the full day, so no matter what fiber she wears, she doesn’t get to feel the effect. For me it’s important how I feel the whole day through. I don’t have a shower with me and I am no queen with an army of servants helping me change clothes from one place to another. So, all I wear lies under the very practical shade of a mother always on the run. Even the makeup I put on needs to allow me to breathe. I use basic face cream, maybe mascara and some lipstick or simple lip balm. Otherwise I feel I am suffocating and I cannot concentrate on my work. So if my makeup needs to be as light as possible, you can imagine the clothing needs to match this light weightiness.

Because I have tested throughout the years all sorts of materials, I have decided that I feel comfortable in natural fibers. Natural fiber for me is something obtained from plants or coming from animals. Number one fiber for me is lovely cotton. I am a big fan of cotton, most common natural fabric. I have lots of clothes made of cotton and since my baby was born my choices for him are mostly made of cotton. I am somehow impressed by so many good options for the kids, but a lot less for the adults.

I also love linen, another natural fiber obtained from a plant which is so good for our diet also. Flax fiber is highly absorbent and faster drying than cotton fiber. The fiber is probably the oldest known in the world. But it’s quite complicated to wear such fabric when you have a chubby body and the fabric wrinkles easily. For myself I think linen is good for the beach as it doesn’t need to be ironed and wrinkles are gone once the tan sets in.

Third I love silk and that can be turned into such beautiful loose creations even for those not so fit. Silk can be found in both natural fiber and synthetic fiber. As far as I know the real silk has the most resistant thread out of all fibers. And during summer silk is absolutely fantastic. The shimmering appearance of silk is due to the triangular prism-like structure of the silk fibre, which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles, thus producing different colors.

Wool is a whole different discussion: it’s good, but my skin doesn’t appreciate it that much. I love cashmere and angorra if I have to choose something, although they’re quite expensive. And I find them difficult to handle due to washing restrictions. To be honest, I have ruined a few beautiful pieces, made out of nice wool, by washing them. I have decided it’s easier in winter to pick some different fiber for my clothes.

The reason I am putting down on paper this whole review on cloth is that recently in our Romanian social media there is this insane nonsense about bamboo fabric. There are so many women supporting this idea that it’s good for our bodies, that it’s natural fabric etc. Let’s get this straight in a simple Wikipedia explanation: there is no natural soft bamboo fabric. Bamboo fiber was used for bustles as it’s a very strong fiber. To make it into a real soft fabric it’s going through a very heavy process. So false marketing is actually selling generally synthetic rayon made from cellulose extracted from bamboo as being good natural fiber. It turns out sometimes you need to breathe well in order to think properly.

Since we are on the subject of clothes, textiles and fashion, besides good fiber, I am also a big fan of fast fashion since this gives work to poor people in very poor countries. I have fast pace fashion items that I keep wearing for years. I am the lucky woman who has worn even during pregnancy regular clothes as much as possible. Maybe during my everyday life I wear same loose cuts. Fast pace fashion I believe is a far better sustainable way of helping poor regions, rather than stopping all the work there and buying more expensive designer clothes made in developed countries by local manpower. To be honest if I want something special, I get my own fabrics and put my creativity into action. I whether make it myself or ask for some professional help. That makes me stand out with a more personal touch. Also, I get to make good use of my spare time. My motto is: if my grandmothers could do such lovely handwork, why couldn’t we do it? And all this propaganda against fast pace fashion doesn’t really decrease sales on these brands. People cannot really afford designer clothes. It used to be affordable for the rich to get their clothes personalised at a seamstress, now it’s something that makes sense if you can spare such money, so still high income people. Fast pace fashion is made by poor people for the poor and middle class people. The rich can pick their preferred designer’s favourite pieces and they don’t mind wasting it after one wear or maximum one year.

I embrace sustainable and down to Earth fashion which gives food for many. I wear fast pace fashion pieces many years later and I recycle and reuse them heavily. Poverty cannot be stopped with a slice of bread thrown one day for a family, but with a regular job you can do a lot of good for them. And these consumer brands work so many designs with natural fibers making both sides win: sustainability and poverty reduction. I guess we should be more careful when we pick sides.
