Woman In Power
WOMAN IN POWER
Woman in power or woman’s empowerment is a tribute to the ’80s or about a generation that had aspirations and is looking for inspiration today. The ’80s were full of women who wanted to become dancers, win dance competitions or women who made innovative careers. Who doesn’t remember Flash Dance, Dirty Dancing and Fame? Well, what I remember best are those girls’ leggings. And yes, I still dream of looking like that and doing those dance moves.
I feel like laying on the couch and watching all those movies once again. And I feel like dancing around the house. Sometimes I take the child to dance with me and he looks at me in amazement and then sits down to play with his car. But I feel good because those movies give me the feeling of power. It inspires me to succeed. And I remember that those women are also wrong and they argue and they apologise and then things connect. And yes, whatever happens in life, remember that you can move on.
Autumn and this rainy day at the beginning of October gives me a fantastic energy to sit with a cup of tea next to me and write down about feeling and how to live life. I feel like writing about movies I would love to watch again, about the inspiration to do things, about the need to express myself. And I remember that in the ’80s women looked sensational and didn’t make as much effort as they do today to go jogging or visit the gym. They went to work on foot, then they ran around after shopping in different stores, because we did not have hypermarkets or supermarkets. And anyway, even if we had, we didn’t have the necessary products.
And us, as little ones, at that time did slalom between school and extra curricular activities. And we didn’t have taxis and we went everywhere by public transportation. And I used to come home from school all alone. And I didn’t have a cell phone so my mom would always know where I was. And I’m thinking now of buying a tracking device for the child. Poor him! He may never know how to take care of himself. He will probably put one on me also as I get older and forget where I live.
But back to the leggings. Yes, women with beautiful legs, tights, leggings and running around. And then do you remember how Melanie Grifith changes from sneakers in the elevator (Working girl)? Yes, that was my dream. To walk to work with my backpack on my back and to be always ready for anything.
And today we subscribe to the gym and we are still dissatisfied with our body. Many women have chosen to run for toning. I really appreciate the effort that every woman makes nowadays to stay fit. But what was so good in the ’80s and’ 90s that we could wear tights and leggings and it doesn’t work out today? Oh, and at that time there was no home delivery. And most Romanian recipes were for heavy food. Now I don’t know how many of us ate sarmale weekly, but it was as if we still knew how to do a kind of slalom during the week with something easier to eat.
The bread we are looking for today is the same as before and we do not know exactly what the original recipe is anymore. Yes, it was plain bread, but today it’s gummy. And do you remember the Turkish recipe from the ’90s? Well, that was gummy too. And today we find bread with the same qualities in most supermarket. I’m looking for sour dough bread so I can eat it easily too. I am very happy when I find good bread at an artisanal bakery, but most of the time I refrain myself from eating bread. Maybe we can’t go back to the dreams of the ’80s and we can’t live with the disappointment of the’ 90s, but we can’t continue to dream that we will become a second America anymore. But it’s very nice to remember what we were up to then and to get out of bed even on rainy days.
Today I get out of bed thinking that I can go and get my rubber boots on, maybe even some colorful ones, a raincoat of any color and go crazy in the rain. And I realize that no one will film me when I do these things, but in my mind I will look like a Jennifer Beal in Flash Dance. And I will not jump high enough to reach the sky, but I will jump enough to restore my confidence that I still have much to do.
All these lines started from the fashion of the leggings, from a sporty element, and led to a lifestyle that we should embrace again. Yes, I still love leggings and tights and I always want to look good in this outfit. But I have to include more sports in my daily routine so I can maintain myself physically and mentally. Woman Empowerment comes with pretensions from our own minds, from those around us and from society. Therefor woman in power is a woman in control of herself and the world around her.
